[Obliv] Surprised at a messenger's death!

I was riding northward on the path near the Aleid Ruin named Morahame,
with my companion Rhianna, when I saw a timberwolf up ahead, so I
dismounted to fire arrows at it, when suddenly a messenger on a black
horse came galloping northward past me, and a fight broke out between
her and the timberwolf.

They struggled together over the bridge just west of Morahame, her
horse got into the fight, two imps from the ruin, and my companion. In
the end the wild creatures died, but so did the messenger!

I was surprised because I had never seen a messenger get involved in a
fight, let alone die from one! Surely they are supposed to be able to
deliver their news messages throughout the game without dying! If they
can't, wouldn't they get wiped out? They gallop along so many roads,
they must be attacked by everything that moves and bites, and wouldn't
last beyond a couple of trips!

I thought the messengers were like the generic guards - they die in a
fight, and another one respawns elsewhere.

Ah! That makes more sense! You wouldn't want them to be all taken out,
and have none left. The guards in Morrowind regenerate, and I suppose
the ones in Oblivion do as well.

I don't think Ida Ottus is going to regenerate, though. I just came
across her corpse, lying on the road to Anvil and a mountain lion was
nearby. I was following Velwyn Benirus back to the Imperial City, on
Shadowmere, after finishing his quest, and he got himself killed by an
minotaur. It's dangerous on the roads, in Oblivion, even for the NPCs!

I just found Velwyn Benirus in a similar state and wondered if I got
something wrong. Thanks for the note.

What I find most annoying about that quirk is that a few of the master
trainers can end up dead through no fault of yours. The master Archery
trainer has a particular tendency to do this. I wish they were a bit
more durable.

Actually, that's quite easy to fix. You go into the Oblivion TES
Construction Set, click on the list of NPCs, go down to each NPC you
want to preserve, then click on the little square next to
"essential". By marking them essential, they won't die, they just go
unconscious for a brief period, then get up again.

Hope this helps

Yes, quite so. I was replying about the master trainers, and I should
have said that.

I've got "Eshme's Bodies" add-on, on my PC, so I don't mind the NPCs
dying. I just take their clothes and type "resurrect 1" into the
console so they can continue their journey naked! :)

Actually, in my game I fixed it by using the Unofficial Oblivion
patch, so no editing on my part was required. However, if I was doing
it myself, I'd have given her more Marksman skill(just why does the
master trainer not have 100 skill herself?) and a better bow, rather
than making her totally unkillable.

I've had further problems with NPCs getting killed. In the Market area
of the Imperial city, bandits have been coming up from the sewer and
killing NPCs. In the past, I've let them chase me so I could have the
fun of watching the guards kill them, but I don't know whether that
encouraged them or whether they would have done it anyway.

When I got back to the markets, Hassiri was lying dead with a bandit
next to him. I went to sell my stuff at Rohssan's and she was closed
during the day, so I went in. She was lying dead in her bed upstairs
and a dead bandit was near the door so I suppose a guard must have
come in and killed him as he was leaving the scene of his crime. Then
I walked outside, and Urjabhi was lying dead with another dead bandit
near him. This game is on XBox 360, no console, so I can't "resurrect"
them or "resurrect 1" them!

It's a shame about Rohssan, I wanted to sell my loot. Now I've got to
go to Chorrol to find another NPC with 1200 maximum sale per item! :(

A couple merchants (such as the one from the Archer's Paradox in
Bravil) have 1000 gold limit. Use a custom Fortify Merchant spell to
get merchant to 100 and get the 500 (i think) bonus.
