Why can't wear this enchanted item?

Hello everyone,

After recovering an Akaviri artifact (called "Draconian Madstone", I
think) for the Countess of Bruma, I decided to keep it, because it
provided 50% resistance to poison and disease. I thought it could be
helpful when facing spider daedra (they do cause poison damage, don't
they?). However, after wearing it for several game days, I started
getting error messages telling me I can't wear this enchanted item. I
could no longer put it on.

This may have happened after I had to visit the Bruma Castle as a
requirement of one of the main quest stages. Did the virtual Countess
somehow put a curse on this stupid stone, because she had realized
that I had not returned it?

I did return the item, finally, but if anyone knows where it stays
hidden, I would be inclined to steal it. Also, please tell me if it
can be equipped. Maybe I can reload and continue with it. Pointers to
equivalent items wil also be helpful.

P.S.: My character is a Redguard warrior (+restoration, alchemy,
security) who is currently lvl23. Maxed on strength, endurance, blade
and heavy armor. I just play to kill time.

I have equipped it with no errors.

No, I don't think they do. The later Daedra paralys you (much to my
annoyance) but I don't think the poison you. I know several Daedra use

I may be wrong though.

Daggerfall and Morrowind were buggy as hell until patch (the former
never was) so consider yourself lucky with Oblivion.

You best bet (I would say) would be to learn enchanting and simply make
yourself an item of that ilk.

I would give it to her: You get the reward - and then you can steal it
back. And the best: It's not a quest item any longer :-) Never
encountered your bug.

According to the Pundits, if you are carted off to jail while wearing an
enchanted object, quest or otherwise, you retain the enchantment when
you are released or escape. You then "cannot equip this item right now"
although it is in your inventory.

Possibly this bug is related to the "doubling and dropping" bug which
has the same effect (usually).

I say usually because I've found that some items resist doubling for a
few times, and others resist the permanent enchantment effect: it is
there and you "cannot equip..." but if you then equip a similar type of
item, e.g. an un-enchanted mithril cuirass when the enchanted item is
the Robe of Deflection then the enchantment disappears and you can now
equip the robe or enchanted cuirass.

After a few auto saves or saves, opening and closing the inventory a few
times, the game catches on and the enchantment is permanent.

I tried the doubling trick with the Akaviri Sunderblade before being
able to repair it; now I can do journeyman repairs the trick is not
needed for magic weapons. Instead of doubling it's better to make 50
copies in a secure location, because the multiplying often doesn't work
for unknown reasons.

One can tell if that is the case by hitting F3 and then the icon on
the far right to check the stat bonuses etc.

I suspect that your explanation is the correct one.

That bug is effective on quest items only.

Hello agaim,

Thanks for the answers, especially the latest ones. That explanation
sounds right, because I had been thrown into jail for a day while
pursuing a Bruma quest involving talking to someone in jail in order
to find his stash.

The bug continues, however. Now I cannot remove the ring given as a
reward by the Countess of Bruma. I get an error message telling me
that quest items cannot be removed from the inventory. In the
meantime, I am using resits paralysis/poison potions before facing
spider daedra.

Best wishes for everyone.

Quest items are always undroppable.

And the "cannot equip quest item" can be used as a cheat... you equip
as many enchanted quest items and then you go to jail or do the dream
world quest. When you get back, you get to keep all the enchantments
without using up any equipment slots...

Thanks for the correction !

When the doubling/dropping trick does not work properly, it seems that
the answer is, after the trick, to remove ALL items of clothing,
weapons, close the inventory, reopen it and put on items again. These
seems to be a housekeeping bug in the inventory program which this
process clears.

Example:

You enchant 5 items with 20% chameleon ( or four with 30% from sigil
stones ) but when you wear this full kit (may be any mixture of rings
clothes, armour) you can still see your fuzzy shape in the third person
view, or your fuzzy hand + sword in first person view. To get the full
chameleon you will need to put on more items than you should require, or
cast a spell.

Now remove everything including weapons, except the obligatory pants (
is there a "Greek" or nudist mod for the classic hand to hand fighter ?
) and close the inventory.

Then put on the chameleon items one by one and you should see yourself
merge gradually into the background.

It is sometimes necessary to repeat this procedure more than once.
