Oblivion: How to lower infamy?

I'm just starting the game. I'm planning on joining the Thieves' Guild
and the Dark Brotherhood. Unfortunately, that'll probably mean a very
high infamy for me.

Is there any way to lower my infamy later in the game?

Infamy can never be lowered. However, your reputation depends on which
is higher of your Fame or Infamy, so you actually want to raise your
Fame. There are sufficient quests to increase Fame that you should have
no difficulty keeping it higher than Infamy unless you go on a big
killing spree.

Hmmm, I haven't done *any* dark brotherhood or theives guild quests. I am
the master of the mages and fighters guild and I am working my way through
the main quest. I was planning to leave all the killing and stealing till
afterwards, is this not a good idea??

I mean, will my infamy rise and rise until it over takes my fame when I do
eventually start the dark and theieves quests???

Or is it better to mix good/bad fame/infamy quests??

Cheers Dre

It doesn't matter what order you do them in, only what numbers for Fame
and Infamy you have.

Not if you do the quests strictly by the book.

Mixing them can potentially keep your Fame up above Infamy as you go,
but it doesn't affect the number of points you get. What I was referring
to is the fact that Fame can only be obtained from quests, which there
are a limited number of, while Infamy can be obtained just by killing
innocents, of which there are far more. If you only do the quests for
the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood, and don't kill unnecessarily,
and don't get caught, I think there should be enough potential Fame
available to keep you on the light side if you keep doing all the good
quests as well. But if you go around killing people for the heck of it,
your Infamy will definitely overflow. If you finish the Thieves Guild
quests first, you can use an artifact obtained at the end to diminish
the effect of further Infamy you recieve after that.

Nice, thanks for the heads up, very very useful info!

I dont make a habit of killing innocents and my infamy atm is 1 :)

Thats great then, cause I'm itching to start stealing, hehehe, once I'm
finished with this main quest I get back into the side, dark and theives.
Problem is once I have done that, then what do I do?? mods I guess, then
start again, LOL.

You're right that there are a limited number of quests that will raise
a character's fame. However your character will gain 1 fame point for
EACH Oblivion gate they close and since new random Oblivion gates in
the countryside will be continually be created as others are closed
until the main quest is completed, potentially there is no limit
(though I suspect one exists) to the number of fame points a character
can earn...

Granted I have no idea if fame increases for closing Oblivion gates
After the main quest is completed, IF you use a mod to keep the gates
open.

That's my 2¢,

It is fair to assume, that 100 is the limit. If you
have a fame of 70+ the guards
will be your dear friends and will pay the fines for
you, as long as they don't
exceeds 1000. There are ways other than completing
quests to raise your
fame. But for me, as I did the main quest as a level
1 character, I had a
fame of 32 at the time of the bruma defense quest,
and completing the
main quest and being named champion netted me 30
extra fame points

i hadn't done any quests other than the main quest,
and I wasn't member of
any guild, so I had a lot of fame points waiting for
me.

My current level 42 character has a fame of 161 and an infamy of
around 47 Without using the console to enhance my character's fame. I
never noticed how many fame points my character got for closing the
Oblivion gates for ALL of the cities in his quest for alies for Bruma
or for completing the main quest. However my character also closed
around 30 random Oblivion gates scattered throughout the land and in
each case he earned 1 fame point for each gate he closed...

As for guards paying a character's fine if their fame is greater than
70, I'll take your word for it since its never happened to my
character. But then again, its been a long time since my character
last had a bounty on his head (he prefers to not get caught). The
last two times he did have a bounty on his head (it was for around 40
gold in each case), he didn't want to risk loosing his stolen items
(mostly keys) if he talked to a guard, so to paid the thieves guild to
remove the bounties.

your Infamy will definitely overflow. If you finish the Thieves Guild
quests first, you can use an artifact obtained at the end to diminish
the effect of further Infamy you recieve after that.
Which artifact is that? It surely isn't you-know-who's hood which
RAISES your infamy to 100 but only as long as you wear it. If I were
any good at graphic editting I'd probably make that particular
artifact look like the Phantom of the Opera's mask - as is it just
looks really really dumb.

Yes it is. Your scores while wearing that item are totally unconnected
with your normal scores, and Infamy acquired while it is worn does not
get added to your character's normal amount.

I haven´t started the Main Quest yet, I´m just working on the Guild
Quests and am now level 12.

After completing the Dark Brotherhood Quest, my Infamy is just below
40, mit fame ist still higher, 50 or so (due to lot´s of smaller side
side quests and the Arena Quest).
Almost everyone is friendly and polite to my, no problem. :-)

Well, it shouldn´t matter at all, because it´s really easy to keep for
fame high enought.

You must have an infame of below 100 to be able to join the Fighters
Guild, but once you joined, it doesn´t matter at all.

P.S.:
The Dark Brotherhood Quest really rules, was a lot fun to play.

Crap, I forgot about the Arena!

Yeah I've heard a lot of people say the dark brotherhood quests are really
good and I'm really looking forward to them :) Next mission once I'm out of
this plane of oblvion is to get my armourer skill up one more notch so I can
fix my own enchanted weapons, the last few trips back into the city has cost
me close to 6000gold *just* to repair my weapons and armour. I can only
just get that amount of loot to sell back so I'm not making any money at
this stage :)

When I played my 2nd character, the charming but selfish
thief/assassin, I never had problems with infamy even after completing
the whole Dark Brotherhood and Theives Guild quest lines. As long as
people don't see you do things, you're fine.

The lift the siege of Kwatchs quest will raise your
fame
7 points. Completing the quests in general is worth
1-2
fame points each. The exception is the dark
brotherhood
quests which will raise your relevant stats instead

Make sure that fame outweighs infamy point-wise, and
you will be fine

Keep track of the balance between the two and do
bad/good
quests alternately, and the task will never be too
tough
