So you folks have got me intrigued and interested in running a Vampire
character in my next game.

My question to you is simple - about what level would you recommend
seeking to become a vampire? I'd prefer to become a mage type which I
suppose means Clan Aundae - which means a trip to Sheogorath which
isn't so easy for a level 1-3 character.

Also who should I seek out to find them in the first place? I gather
there are two or three people in Sadrith Mora who would push you in
that direction.

Any hints or helpful URLs? (I've done a bit of web searching but have
found no clue as to what level might be appropriate - having completed
the main quest three times I'm looking for ways to complete minor
quests in the game...)

A low level character with some decent skills in alchemy and
destruction can survive.

I didn't do all the vampire quests available so I'm not sure that I
have an appropriate amount of experience. Plan on being able to kill
other vampires, tomb ghouls, and any surprises without being able to
interact with many outsiders.

I was able to trade with vampires in my clan but I can't name offhand
what they kept in stock like I can with that little minx Ajira.

You'll feel the need for speed since hitching a ride just ain't gonna
happen. Make sure you can mark-recall, intervene, levitate,
tele-invisi-breath while finding these abilities is still an option.

Plan on spending lots of time walking outside in the dark, and almost
no time enjoying scenery or working any non-vamp quest.

My character never was cured, he's just sitting there on my hard drive
wondering where the hell I went.

I like to think I've left him in that chest, the one mentioned in the
book where a girl takes a course on picking locks, always taking her
time getting to know the lock rather than just the task at hand.

He must be ready to feed again.

Finding all the propylon indicies will make fast travel as a vampire
somewhat feasible. Move into a Dwemer stronghold of choice.

When I was at the beginning, I killed all the orcs near one of the
propylons -- I mean all of them. Does that mean the index is lost forever?

IIRC The actual propylon keystones are kept by different people......there
locations are given by the dunmer mage in Caldera Mages Guild (on first
floor at top of the stairs)......The orcs you refer to are *not* holders of
any keystones.....though they may be part of another quest.

Nope, only one is actually carried around by it's owner, and
he's a Dark Elf named Rolls In It(sp?).

I think that's only if you have the master index plug installed.

I swear I got one after raiding somebody's corpse. The propylon keystones
are the indexes correct?

What is the best vampire clan?
