OK, I got a soul gem with a named golden saint in it. I take it to
the Balmora mages guild and try to get a constant effect levitation.
As soon as I click "buy" I am attacked by everyone. They also attack
if I sell the soul gem. Enchanting it in Caldera works ok. What
causes this? Is it the "how dare you kill an evil daedra with a
cute name" or is it because the soul gem may have been stolen? (I'm
not sure if it was or not)

I'm also somewhat amazed at how incredibly difficult it is to enchant
even with my intellegence boosted to 350.

You probably stole a grand soul gem during an earlier mages guild quest
to put a fake soul gem in the desk. If so all grand soul gems are
considered to be stolen in the Balmora mages guild. One of the many
annoyances you will run into.

Just don't enchant in Balmora (or wherever you stole the gem from)... other
enchanters won't mind using stolen soulgems :) The one in Wolverine's hall
is much better anyway... no need to run around chasing the NPCs down, no one
will block the narrow corridor...

BTW: Why are most of the corridors in Morrowind so narrow?!! And if the
indoor area is to be spacious, does it always have to be soooooooo spacious
like those of Redorans?

Here is a great advert for keeping your own notes separate.
A number of items you find/steal will make that site sensitive if you trade
the same goods. see Nalcarya and diamonds if you stole from upstairs for
Habassi (thieves guild)

Did you steal a grand soul gem from the enchantress in Balmora? If so,
she thinks that any soul gem you sell to her (via enchanting or direct
sale) belongs to her.

If you want to clear your name, try selling them gem, then walk
outside and turn yourself in to a guard. And expect a hefty fine. But,
your conscience (and your permanent record) will be clear.

Open the Console and type "TFH" (Toggle Full Help) and point at the Gem.
If you see a Owner-Entry, the Gem has a Owner.
But I have never Problems with Gems.
Maybe it is, if you have stole the Gems from the Desk in the Mages-Guild (the
Desk with the Fake-Gem-Quest).
Best Idea: Use an other NPC as a Mage.
